GB News was paused to issue a breaking news bulletin, as Nana Akua announced that Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has formally applied to stand as an MP. Over a breaking news banner, Nana said: “Andy Burnham has made his move. The Greater Manchester mayor formally applied to stand as a Labour MP. That has reignited speculation about his future in the Labour party and putting fresh pressure on Keir Starmer.
“We will be discussing all about what is going on. It is seven minutes past 5pm, moments before the deadline, Andy made his move, wow so that is seriously happening.”
Burnham has applied to stand for parliament in Manchester constituency of Gorton and Denton, which will be deciding in the upcoming by-election. His application will have to be accepted by Labour’s national executive committee (NEC) but there have been predictions that the party’s ruling body, which is dominated by Starmer allies, could try to prevent Burnham’s return to parliament.

London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan told the Fabian Society’s conference on Saturday that Burnham should be allowed to stand.
Khan told the event in central London: “I’m a firm believer in the best team having all the talent playing for them, and if Andy wants to return to parliament, I will try and make some time between now and the byelection to knock on some doors for him.”
MP Lucy Powell also pointed out that the seat could be lost to Reform UK or the Green Party if the wrong Labour candidate was selected.
She added: “In that context, I always want to see the very best candidate, the person who can most help Labour win in that very difficult byelection. I want to see the best candidates come forward and be able to come forward and help us win.”
GB News viewers rushed to social media to comment on the news, as one said: “Where does Keir go now,” adding a picture of Starmer on a tractor in a tunnel along with laughing emojis.
A third agreed: “Excellent. Let Labour civil war commence,” as a fourth chimed inL “Good for reform party.”
