Labour claims it’s solving UK migrant crisis – the truth will make your blood boil

Labour claims it is getting tough on illegal immigration but Britain’s borders remain as leaky as a sieve, writes Giles Sheldrick.

There are numerous examples of how Britain has become a pale imitation of the proud country it once was, but few are more stark than this.

The first wave of more than 500 illegal migrants have just moved into their new lodgings on a former military base in Crowborough, East Sussex.

And with their arrival came an admission – the first – by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood; these men are here illegally.

For years the Left and its pearl-clutching brethren of activists and human rights lawyers have balked at the use of the word “illegal” in the context of those who pitch up here, well, illegally. That is, with no right, let alone paperwork, identification, or documents.

Ms Mahmood was unequivocal in her use of the words “illegal migrants”. But that’s about as good as it gets.

Her choice of accommodation for these young men, and they are all exclusively young men, couldn’t be more insulting.

The camp and area around Crowborough has been used extensively by various military units over the years, most notably by Canadian forces before the D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied France in 1944.

Indeed their heroic assault on Juno Beach resulted in significant casualties but the bravery of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, supported by the 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade, in securing the beachhead allowed the liberation of Western Europe to start.

In short, they played their part in saving the world from tyranny.

Now, approaching 82 years after the Normandy Landings, what a dark irony the very same location used to plot the mighty military raid is now being used to accommodate those who have invaded our shores.

The words of this third rate government will send shivers down the spines of everyone, not just those in this pretty part of rural East Sussex.

Waved into their warm, comfortable set up were “single adult male illegal migrants” who will receive taxpayer-funded bed and board while asylum claims are processed.

The naivety of the Home Office knows no bounds. Officials say each will be housed for up to three months and removed from the UK if their claim is rejected.

It claims “robust safety and public‑protection safeguards” have been put in place with specialist security on site 24/7, CCTV, and strict sign-in procedures for residents. Yes, they really are called residents.

But there is nothing to stop them absconding and joining an already thriving underground population, disappearing into the black economy which operates using the currency of criminality.

Why hang around if you thought you might be removed?

It’s not as if this Government can be trusted when it comes to keeping the public safe.

Hadush Kebatu, jailed after sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and a woman while living in an asylum hotel in Epping, was mistakenly freed.

And the number of prisoners released in error has risen by 128% – increasing from 115 in 2023/24 to 262 in the year to March.

Ms Mahmood has sought to strike a hard line on illegal immigration, admitting it is “tearing our country apart”, but she is completely missing the point.

Public anger is palpable and will only grow as Labour plays politics with the issue.

This government claims more than 400 hotels were opened under the Tories at a cost of £9 million a day.

It says that under 200 remain, with overall asylum costs down 15%, as it seeks credit for addressing the number one issue for voters.

But it is smoke and mirrors because nothing has been done to reduce the numbers arriving here, illegally.

Last year 41,472 illegal migrants made it across the Channel in small boats – the second-highest year on record – and these are just the ones noted by officials. It is almost certain a similar number made it undetected and have since vanished.

The truth is they – and we – have no idea because Britain’s borders remain as leaky as a sieve.

Any government’s first duty is to keep its people safe.

It is clear Labour is failing, no matter how hard it tries to spin the issue.
