Keir Starmer has issued fresh condemnation of Donald Trump, after comments from the President about NATO troops sparked furious reaction across the west.
Last night the President claimed that he did not know whether NATO troops would ever come to the aid of the US, adding that those sent to fight alongside America in Afghanistan “stayed a little back, a little off the front lines”.
1,160 non-US NATO troops died in Afghanistan, including 457 Brits and 159 Canadians.
Today Sir Keir Starmer‘s spokesman joined in with the widespread condemnation, blasting: “The President was wrong to diminish the role of NATO troops, including British forces in Afghanistan following the 911 attacks on the US, article five of the NATO Treaty was invoked for the first time, and British forces served alongside American and other allied troops in sustained combat operations.
“457 British service personnel lost their lives in Afghanistan, and many more were wounded.
