UK drinks firm crashes into administration – famous for popular gin

The business was founded by local entrepreneurs.

A well-known drinks retailer in Harrogate, best known for the popular Slingsby Gin brand, has entered administration. Spirit of Harrogate Limited, which is based in the town and operates from its premises on Montpellier Parade, has appointed Lewis Business Recovery & Insolvency to oversee the administration process. Gareth Lewis and Matthew Russell have been named as the joint administrators. Founded in 2014, the company has faced increasing pressure in recent years amid challenging trading conditions affecting the hospitality and drinks industry.

In a statement, Gareth Lewis, proposed administrator at Lewis Business Recovery & Insolvency, said: “Unfortunately the business has, like many in its sector, struggled with rising costs and difficult trading conditions in recent years.

“Spirit of Harrogate is one of Harrogate’s iconic independent retailers and the Slingsby Gin product range is very well respected both locally and nationally.”

The business was founded by local entrepreneurs Marcus Black and Mike Carthy and employs five members of staff. It has established a strong reputation both locally and nationally for its Slingsby Gin product range.

Spirit of Harrogate quickly became a familiar presence on Harrogate’s high street, blending retail with immersive gin experiences and helping to put the town on the map within the UK’s growing craft spirits sector.

The company website says Slingsby Gin is inspired by the discovery of Harrogate’s Tewit Well in 1571 by William Slingsby, which helped establish the town as a spa destination. The brand aims to capture the “Spirit of Harrogate” and its restorative nature in every bottle.

The administrators have confirmed that the business and its assets are now being actively marketed for sale as a going concern, with the aim of safeguarding jobs and securing the best possible outcome for creditors, Harrogate Advertiser reported.

Potential purchasers are being invited to come forward.

Those interested in acquiring the business are advised to contact Olivia Oates at Lewis Business Recovery & Insolvency on 0113 245 9444.
