The HMRC helplines have crashed following a “technical issue”, just two weeks before the deadline set for Brits to file their self-assessments. People who fail to file their online tax return by midnight on January 31 face a £100 fine.

While people can still file their self assessment despite the crash, the helpline issue may be a problem for people who need support before being able to complete the tax task. HMRC said on X: “Our helplines are currently closed due to a technical issue, which we’re urgently working to resolve. We apologise to customers and advise them to try calling us later. Our digital services remain available.”
