Reform UK leader says he has reported the dissident to counter-terrorism police
Nigel Farage has reported democracy activist Alaa Abd El-Fattah to counter-terrorism police over historical social media posts. The dissident is at the centre of a row over comments on X which resurfaced after his arrival in the UK earlier this week following his release from detention in Egypt.
The now-deleted posts appear to show Mr Abd El-Fattah branding Britons “dogs and monkeys”, calling for Zionists to be killed and violence against the police, and expressing hatred of white people.
Reform UK leader Mr Farage said this evening: “I have reported Alaa Abd El-Fattah to counter-terrorism police.” Sir Keir Starmer has faced criticism for publicly celebrating Mr Abd El-Fattah’s arrival in Britain on Boxing Day after the posts dating back to 2010 emerged.
It is understood that the Prime Minister was unaware of the statements when he said he was “delighted” that the British-Egyptian dual national had been reunited with family in the UK.
The Tories have called for Mr Abd El-Fatta to be stripped of his British citizenship, which he reportedly obtained through his UK-born mother, and deported.
Mr Abd El-Fattah was detained in Egypt in September 2019 and sentenced to five years in prison on charges of spreading false news in December 2021.
His imprisonment was branded a breach of international law by UN investigators, and he was released after being pardoned by Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi in a move the previous Tory government also lobbied for.
The Foreign Office said today: “The Government condemns Mr El-Fattah’s historic tweets and considers them to be abhorrent.”
The statement was added to one issued earlier that read: “Mr El-Fattah is a British citizen.
“It has been a long-standing priority under successive governments to work for his release from detention, and to see him reunited with his family in the UK.”
