Martin Lewis has told households that letters worth £150 are being sent out to anyone who is eligible between now and January.
The Money Saving Expert founder returned on the latest episode of The Martin Lewis Money Show Live on Tuesday, December 9 with an investment special.
But at the end of the episode Martin also gave viewers several key financial news updates, including on the Warm Home Discount scheme.
The DWP scheme for England and Wales (there are different rules in Scotland), sees £150 being given to eligible people.
Those who will get the money will receive a letter setting out their eligibility and usually will not need to do anything.
But Martin warned that there are a lot of scams at this time of year trying to trick people into giving money or information in the guise of the Warm Home Discount scheme.
Martin said: “The Warm Home Discount letter is being sent out to eligible people between October and January.
“It will always be a mail letter. If you get a text or email or a call asking you for information, they’re scams.
“Some energy firms might text you and say it’s happening, but if they want you to click or they want you to call, it’s a scam be careful. Most people won’t need to do anything, a few people will be told to call the helpline.”
Martin said that the number for the official Warm Home Discount helpline is 0800 030 9322, so if you’re contacted by a different number or asked to call a different number, it’s a scam. In Scotland, the rules are slightly different on eligibility.
Martin added: “In Scotland, if you’re not on the Guarantee Element of Pension Credit but you are on an eligible benefit, look it up, then you will need to apply via your energy firm.”
The Government’s website explains: “The Warm Home Discount Scheme is a one-off £150 discount off your electricity bill.
“If you’re eligible, your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill. The money is not paid to you.
“You’ll usually get the discount automatically if you’re eligible. You only need to apply if you’re on a low income in Scotland – contact your energy supplier to apply.
“You may be able to get the discount on your gas bill instead if your supplier provides you with both gas and electricity and you’re eligible. Contact your supplier to find out.”
