LBC presenter Nick Ferrari has sternly reminded his listeners that a general election was sorted within two months at the end of the Second World War, following reports Sir Keir Starmer is delaying mayoral elections for another two years. Addressing LBC listeners this morning, a furious Ferrari challenged the Labour Party to “sue” him, as he accused Chancellor Rachel Reeves of lying. Ferrari raged: “This idea that they can’t put these elections together for another two years… Don’t buy it for a moment. They are, to use a famous term for the politics of years gone by. They are frightened. They know they would take a heck of a kicking, probably from Reform, but certainly from other parties as well. Maybe the Greens, and, I don’t know, Lib Dems or the Conservatives.
“They know how desperately unpopular they are with a Budget where the Chancellor lied. And I’ll say it again – come sue me. You lied. Two words. Not you’re fired. I can’t get to those words yet, but I can certainly say you lied.
“And just let me tell you this. There’s a historical note for you here, because, as you think you know, I am quite a fan of history. At the end of the Second World War, when there was quite a bit of disruption in this country, they managed to arrange a general election in two months.”
The journalist concluded: “Does that tell you how we’ve declined? In the Second World War, people came back, and they had all sorts of issues to confront. No housing and genuine poverty.
“A general election in two months – but Labour can’t get these mayoral elections in parts of the country for another two years?!”
The host’s rant comes after four new combined authorities – Essex, Hampshire and the Solent, Sussex and Brighton, and Norfolk and Suffolk – will have their polls pushed back to 2028. They were due to take place next May alongside other council elections.
When asked if the delays were effectively cancelling democracy, Starmer stated: “No, there are various arrangements being put in place to ensure all the elections could take place at the right time, depending on the configurations of the council and other arrangements.”
