Sky News aired a blistering takedown of Chancellor Rachel Reeves, as the Labour minister was left stuttering as she was ruthlessly interrupted on the show. Anchor Sophie Ridge was live in the studio and grilling Reeves via video link when she confronted her on broken promises pledged in Labour’s manifesto.
Ridge put to Reeves: “In your manifesto, you promised to not increase taxes on working people. You’ve broken that pledge, haven’t you?” as the Chancellor responded with: “We were very specific in the manifesto that we wouldn’t increase the rates of income tax, national insurance or VAT-“
Ridge cut her off to say: “I’m really sorry, I’m gonna come in straight away-“
But Reeves forged ahead, stuttering: “We do recognise that the- Well, I- I- I recognise… But I- I- I’m answering your…”
Ridge clarified: “I’ve got it right here, it says that Labour will not increase taxes on working people.”
The Chancellor said: “Yes and then we go on to list those rates, those taxes. I do recognise that yesterday I have asked working people to contribute a bit more by freezing those thresholds for a further three years from 2028, I do recognise that that will mean working people pay a bit more.

“But I’ve kept that contribution to an absolute minimum by closing a number of tax loopholes and bearing down on government spending on waste and inefficiency. As a result I have managed to keep that to an absolute minimum.”
Viewers were baffled by the moment on social media, with one writing: “Reeves needs to go, her Budget did nothing for economic growth! Working people paying for more welfare. Shameful, more people will join those on benefits.”
Another echoed: “I’m bored with seeing this person. Can the government not find a single competent and honest person to speak for them?”
