The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a warning to older people who could potentially miss out on cash. Millions of people are set to receive up to £300 from the DWP over the coming months – those born on or before September 21, 1959, and who lived in England or Wales during the qualifying week (September 15-21, 2025), will be eligible for the payment.

However, the DWP has cautioned people against responding to text messages, as they could be tricked out of their money. In a post on X, previously known as Twitter, the DWP stated: “If you get a text about the ‘Winter Fuel Payment‘ or the ‘Winter Fuel Allowance’, it is a scam. Winter Fuel Payments are automatic, you do not need to do anything.”

People have also been advised to report any suspicious messages here

Payments are automatic. There’s no need for you to take any action – and if you do respond to text messages, fraudsters may take money from your account.

If you or your partner are over State Pension age, you could receive £200 towards your bills.

If you or your partner are over 80, you could receive £300.

If you’re eligible, the Winter Fuel Payment for 2025 will be paid directly into your account between November and December 2025.

Your Winter Fuel Payment will be recovered through the tax system if your taxable income exceeds £35,000.
