Sadiq Khan hit back at Donald Trump last night as he made light of the US President’s allegations of Sharia Law in London. Mr Khan had Labour conference goers in stitches at a party in Liverpool last night as he heaped praise on the host city.

The London Mayor joked: “I love coming to Liverpool. I love the football. I love the food. I love the people. Plus it means I get to take a break from the Sharia Law in London.”

It came after President Trump used his speech at the United Nations General Assembly to attack Khan.

He said Mr Khan is a “terrible mayor”, adding: “Now they want to go to Sharia law. But you are in a different country, you can’t do that.”

Sir Keir Starmer defended the Labour mayor, insisting that while he agrees with President Trump on “plenty of things… there are some issues on which we disagree.”

“What the president said about the mayor, who’s doing a really good job, in fact driving down serious crime, what he said about the introduction of Sharia law was ridiculous nonsense.

“I support our mayor, I’m really proud of the fact we have a Muslim mayor of a very diverse city.

“We do work with the Americans on a huge number of issues. On this issue I disagree, and I stand with our mayor.”

Sir Sadiq also used another conference party last night to add to his criticism of the President. At a Jamaica Party hosted by Labour MP Dawn Butler, Mr Khan praised the diversity in the room and said the party is “Donald Trump’s worst nightmare.”

He said knife crime in London is many times lower than in America, and that yanks are moving to Britain’s capital in high numbers.

He added: “What they’re obsessed about is the fact we are a successful, liberal, diverse city, the greatest city in the world.

“We show integration works. We show diversity is a strength, not a weakness, that makes us stronger not weaker, richer not poorer, we show you can be a proud Muslim, a proud Londoner, a proud Englishman, a proud Brit and a proud Westerner.”
