Weather maps show Britain will be lashed by rain in a few days’ time, with wind gusts pushing 50mph in some spots. Models generated by WX Charts on Wednesday show a 600-mile-long band of rain stretching from the north of Scotland to the South of England at 3pm on Saturday. Maps show rain will be particularly heavy in parts of southern Scotland, where up to 5mm looks set to fall.

A swathe of the South of England looks set for a downpour, along with the West Midlands, North-west England and parts of North-east England at the same time, according to WX Charts’ maps. England, Wales and southern Scotland could also see gusts peaking between 30-40mph by 6pm on Saturday.

Maps also show some areas remaining dry mid-afternoon on Saturday, with East Anglia, Devon, Cornwall and much of South Wales rain-free, according to WX Charts’ weather modelling.

The Met Office‘s five-day forecast says there is potential for a more persistent spell of wet and windy weather developing this weekend, with temperatures remaining around average.

Met Office spokeswoman said: “A change of type is here, with wetter, windier conditions moving in from today, bringing a more unsettled end to meteorological summer, with temperatures closer to average and all areas seeing rain at times, with higher accumulations focused towards the west.”

Maps show a huge band of rain sweeping in from the Atlantic and making its way across the UK on Saturday with much of the UK getting a soaking.

Netweather forecaster Terry Scholey said on Tuesday that this week sees the start of an unsettled period as fronts move in from the west.

He said Thursday will bring an increasing number of showers, some of which will be heavy and persistent in the north and west of the UK, with gusty winds mixed in.

Mr Scholey added: “Further frontal systems will bring more rain at times on Friday and into the weekend. Although this rain is much needed, a sustained spell of wet weather is required to replenish the very low reservoir levels.”
