Brits who are looking to sell or trade their existing vehicle have been urged to consider the timing carefully.

A small change to new cars registered in the UK from next month is set to impact all British drivers, a leading car expert warns. As of September 1, all new UK cars will carry a 75 plate, replacing the current 25 plate system, which will apply to all vehicles registered between September 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026.
However, the change may have a “significant impact” on the car market due to the effect on resale value. Richard Evans, head of technical services at webuyanycar, is urging those who are looking to sell or trade their existing vehicle to consider the timing carefully. A car sold in August may fetch a higher price than in September, as depreciation typically accelerates following a plate change, Mr Evans explains.

While depreciation varies by make and model, vehicles can lose 15–35% of their value in the first year alone and up to 60% after three years, data from webuyanycar shows.
“The launch of a new registration plate often has a significant impact on the car market. While the change might seem small, the perceived age difference between a car registered in August and one registered just weeks later in September can significantly affect resale value,” Mr Evans warns.
He added: “However, there are opportunities for savvy buyers. Cars with a 25 plate registered in August are likely to see a drop in cost as dealers make room for incoming 75 plate stock.
“For motorists who plan to keep their car long-term and aren’t overly concerned about future resale price, purchasing in August can represent good value. Though if future resale value is a priority, it could be worth waiting until the new plates launch.”
The first two numbers on a licence plate, known as age identifiers, indicate when the car was registered. These are split into six-month periods, between March-August and September-February. For the former, the number used is simply the year. For the latter, you add 50, meaning a car registered in March 2025 would be 25 and in September, it would be 75.
