Brits have been told to prepare torches, batteries, and portable chargers ahead of possible power cuts today. The Met Office issued yellow warnings for thunderstorms, in effect from 9am until 6pm on Saturday, which could see some UK households without electricity. Over 60 areas of England and Wales are expected to be impacted by the weather event, some of which will likely experience “short term loss of power”.
The weather agency said: “People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items. Around 10-15mm of rain is due to fall within in less than an hour, with the worst-affected areas potentially seeing a total of 30-40mm. There may be lighting, hail, and strong wind gusts bringing extra hazards and travel chaos.

It also recommended preparing for flash flooding with a flood plan and emergency flood kit, as heavy rain throughout the day can accumulate quickly.
A yellow warning means there’s a medium likelihood of the weather event happening, though the impacts would remain low.
The warning reads: “There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.
“Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes. Delays to train services are possible. Some short term loss of power and other services is likely.”
This is due to impact the East Midlands, West Midlands, East England, London, South East England, South West England, and Wales.
The Met Office issued advice to people living in these areas on what to do in the event of a thunderstorm, and what never to do.
It said: “If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter (such as a car).
“Do not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning. If you are on an elevated area move to lower ground.”
