Prime Minister Keir Starmer was humiliated in the latest episode of Have I Got News For You as David Tennant took a savage swipe while presenting the BBC show. In one of the segments, David said: “Local election results have, according to experts, brought Nigel Farage one step closer to No10.

Keir Starmer, talking at the VE Day commemoration event, said ‘we owe the veterans a debt which can never be fully repaid’, as he shared a small quote which read “can never be repaid”. Tennant paused and then quipped: “He could start by giving them back the Winter Fuel Allowance”, as the audience clapped and cheered in the background, with the rest of the panellists appearing to look slightly awkward as the show moved on. Viewers rushed to social media to share their shock at the dig, as one said: “I love it when the left eat their own, which is becoming more and more common these days.”

Another added: “They’re turning on each other!” as a third praised: “Superbly delivered, I don’t believe PM gives a tool toss.”

A fourth swiped: “Ooh, edgy! Criticising Labour? Whatever next?” as a fifth was left less impressed, saying: “Is that funny? I don’t think it is.”

It comes after Tennant’s infamous row with Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, as he told an awards ceremony he would like to live in a world where Badenoch “doesn’t exist any more”.

Following the comments, Keir Starmer turned on Tennant as he said he “wouldn’t have engaged” in the discussion in the same way.

He said: “In politics, as in life, it’s important that we are able to robustly disagree with others – obviously that happens a lot in the general election campaign,” the Labour leader told reporters on a visit to a GP surgery near Nottingham.

“But we should do it with respect for everybody involved in that robust discussion. I wouldn’t have engaged in the way that he did. I think it’s right that we have these robust discussions, but we must do it respectfully.”
