GB News was halted for breaking news this week as one star announced “the end” for Labour MP Jess Phillips. Patrick Christys was on hand to deliver the latest, after the MP declined a request from Oldham Council to meet with them over the investigation of the town’s grooming gangs scandal.

Patrick was hosting his evening programme when the news broke, with a breaking strap that read: “Breaking – Jess Phillips rejects meeting request.” He told viewers: “GB News can now reveal that Jess Phillips rejected a request to meet with Oldham Council, as it requested government support to investigate the town’s grooming gangs scandal. I’ll read that again!

“The safeguarding minister wrote to the local authority in December to say that neither her nor Home Secretary Yvette Cooper would be able to meet the council leadership due to the demands on their time. Emily, your views on that? What does that say about Jess Phillips and Yvette Cooper?”

Commentator Emily Sheffield responded: “I just want to say, I’m not one of those who is going to go in full throttle against Jess Phillips, because she has actually done a lot of campaigning on women’s safety and ending sexual violence against women.

“I’m pretty flabbergasted to hear that because I think, if you’ve done the research as I have, and Jess Phillips certainly understood what went on in those grooming gangs, they came up with all sorts of excuses about why they wouldn’t hold that extra inquiry that the council were asking for and they tried to cover it up with all sorts of nonsense, when the fact was there were very good reasons why that council wanted that specific inquiry, not the larger one that Labour tried to paint had happened.”

She added: “The fact that she’s saying ‘we were too busy to even meet the council’, I’m kind of flabbergasted by that actually.”

Matthew Laza chimed in to echo: “I think her future in that role may be in doubt.” But it was Patrick who hammered the final nail in the coffin as he tweeted: “I think this has to be the end for Jess Phillips.”

Fans, however, were divided in the comments section, with one penning: “Jess Phillips has likely done more for the safety of women and girls than any other MP.” Another argued: “Every other public body employee lives in fear of not safeguarding appropriately, so what is going on with Jess Philips, when she is on the top of the pile and saying she doesn’t have time for possibly the biggest abuse scandal in our history?”
