GB News was paused for an urgent immigration announcement this week, as host Matt Goodwin told viewers: “You have been lied to.” Going on to detail a recent report released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he explained that the economic downsides to welcoming refugees and low-skilled workers might outweigh the benefits in a crushing blow to prime minister Keir Starmer.

Matt told viewers: “Now, you have been lied to. For decades you’ve been told that you must be subjected to millions of people entering this country, and for what? Well beyond the baseless claims of cultural enrichment multiculturalists have made, we were told that it was going to be good for the economy, that it would lift all boats. That was the argument that ran through much of the commentary about mass immigration from the 1990s onwards.”

State of the Nation

He went on to say: “For years, the liberal establishment insisted that more people meant a higher GDP. And that could only be a good thing for everyone – a more productive, more dynamic economy. But now a new bombshell report from one of the largest global establishment institutions, the International Monetary Fund, the IMF, has shattered that consensus, revealing that low skill mass immigration is, shock horror, suppressing the wages for the poorest workers in the west.”

Matt concluded: “But is this really news, I ask? Is this really a bombshell report at all, or is it actually just the latest report to find that the liberal establishment has been getting this wrong for many years, if not decades?”

However, the IMF has also found that mass immigration can help reduce inflation in the UK, with deputy managing director Gita Gopinath explaining to BBC Newsnight: “With inflation as high as it is, having workers who can fill the shortages in some of the sectors that we’re seeing right now will help with bringing inflation down.”

Matt fumed on his show: “If mass immigration makes us richer, then why is it that in the three years leading up to 2024 — when net migration reached 2.3million, an absolutely astonishing figure — we saw such stagnant economic growth?

“If immigration is good for the economy, why is productivity in the toilet? Why is GDP per capita going in the wrong direction? Productivity in this country has barely grown in over 15 years.”
