Prince Harry has been escorted out of court after a supporter’s outburst interrupted legal proceedings. The Duke of Sussex has been at the Court of Appeal in London as he continues to appeal the decision of the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) that he should receive a different degree of protection when in the UK compared to when he was a full-time senior working royal.
This was a decision made after the Duke, 40, and his wife Meghan Markle, 43, stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and moved to the US.
Harry’s bodyguards got between him and the woman as the Duke was hurried out of the courtroom. The member of the public then said: “If you’re members of the press, you’re the reason he’s no longer in England.”
After the woman left the courtroom, Harry returned for the private part of the hearing. It is believed parts of the hearing are being held in private as they contain confidential security matters.
The Duke has appeared in person for both days of the hearing this week, having flown from California to be present.
The Home Office has hit back at being held accountable for any decision taken regarding Prince Harry’s security row and said the “fallout” from that comes from the “democratically accountable decision maker”.
In oral submissions about the role of Ravec, Sir James Eadie KC, for the Home Office, said: “If the wrong decision is made, the fallout from that comes to the Secretary of State.”
The Home Secretary is now Labour’s Yvette Cooper. When the decision to downgrade Prince Harry‘s decision was taken in 2020, the role was held by the Tories‘ Priti Patel.
