Nigel Farage attends the ‘Battle for Britain’ farmer protest
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has vowed to reverse Rachel Reeves’s inheritance tax raid if he becomes Prime Minister.
He addressed farmers on Monday ahead of a mass demonstration in Westminster this afternoon.
Speaking at the north London farm, Mr Farage said: “I promise if we have anything to do with it after the next election… we will reverse it.”
Tractors are expected to come by convoy into the Capital ahead of speeches at 3pm opposite Downing Street.
Demonstrations in recent months have attempted to show the Government how concerned rural communities are about changes announced at October’s budget.
Labour’s plans to impose 20% inheritance tax on farms worth more than £1 million – or £3 million in some circumstances.
But farmers have warned this threatens the nation’s food security as many would have to sell land to afford the tax bill.
The Daily Express’s Save Britain’s Family Farms has demanded a U-turn.
Top farmer says she’s ‘hopeful’ for Labour u-turn
Top farmer Liz Webster from Save British Farming says she’s ‘hopeful’ that Labour will listen and u-turn on their inheritance tax plans.
She adds that while Nigel Farage’s support is clear, his backing of Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ policy would leave British farmers massively shortchanged in the event of a trade deal with the United States.
NFU president says strength of feeling is ‘incredibly high’
The National Farmers’ Union – which has organised previous protests on the issue – said it supports any of its members taking part on Monday.
NFU president Tom Bradshaw said: “The strength of feeling around the proposed family farm tax is still incredibly high.
“We support any members who want to take part in other respectful and lawful demonstrations which work towards our aim to stop the family farm tax.”
The UK’s food system could ‘collapse’, warns campaigner
Liz Webster from Save British Farming says the IHT reforms means the UK’s food system could “collapse”.
She told Sky News: “This is about a system that we all rely on. That’s what this government don’t seem to recognise.
“And that’s what we’re trying to communicate with them – if we don’t have enough food in this country there will be a major problem.”
Farage says farmers campaign must be ‘persistent’
Nigel Farage said a campaign by farmers against changes to inheritance tax rules can be successful if it is “persistent and peaceful”.
Speaking at a Farmers To Action campaign event he said: “I’m pleased to see the campaign is ramping up. It’s growing right across the country.
“The message I’ve been putting to them, I think they’re listening too, which is 100 Labour MPs now represent rural seats – if they see local communities getting behind these families, they’re going to start getting scared, and they’re going to start putting pressure on No 10, and let’s face it, they’re in pretty big trouble already.
“So I think if this campaign is persistent and peaceful, they can get change.”
Asked if he thought inheritance tax should be scrapped completely, Mr Farage said: “Yes, I do actually. You’re basically taxing money that’s been taxed already as a death tax, and it’s horrible.
“People living in semi-detached houses in London are now dragged into inheritance tax.
“And yes, of course, you can do seven-year planning and all the rest of it, but unlikely things happen. I honestly believe just getting rid of inheritance tax as a whole would be a good thing.”
2000 Tractors in ‘Battle for Britain’ protest
We’re hearing that up to 2000 tractors are heading towards Westminster for today’s demonstartion against the government’s inheritance tax raid on farmers. That’s more than three times the amount that brought Whitehall to a standstill in December when around 650 rolled past parliament.
