as he appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain this morning (December 13). The Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero laughed as he admitted that he “didn’t know” what had happened to £40,000 that had reportedly been spent on sprucing up his office.

Kate Garraway quizzed him about the cash as she said: “Now, figures have come out about how mich people have been spending on refurbishing their offices. Mr Miliband, yours is pretty pricey, it’s one of the biggest.”

She shared that the politician had reportedly spent more than £40,000 on his offices, as she asked: “So what did you spend it on?” Mr Miliband answered as honestly as he could as he admitted: “I have no idea Kate,” before bursting out laughing.

As Kate laughed along, while replying: “That’s honest,” her co-star, Adil, pulled a face of disgust. Ed offered an explanation while stuttering his words, saying: “The first I knew about it was this morning when I got asked on another channel about it. So I’ll get back to you.”

Adil, who was still looking somewhat perplexed, abruptly interrupted the politician as he said: “I admire your honesty but shouldn’t you know the money that is being spent in your own office? I mean we can laugh about it but that’s quite a serious point, isn’t it?”

Ed appeared to be caught out once more as he stumbled over his words while trying to give a further explanation. “I think it’s across the whole department, to be honest,” he said.

“And Adil, you know, my biggest responsibility is the nation’s energy system, security of supply, people’s bills, creating the good jobs we need as a country.

“I think, you know, I’ll obviously check back now on what this money is being spent on but if I spent my time measuring all of the refurbishments and taking charge of all the refurbishments, I’m not sure that is the biggest priority for the nation in terms of the big issues that your viewers are facing.”

Kate tried to move on as she urged: “Ok well I think that you should go and make some calls and then we might talk about it again.”

Fans on social media were split over Adil’s interview techniques. One posted to X/Twitter: “The problem with Adil Ray is he cannot interview someone he clearly dislikes without it showing in his manner and language. Every guest, no matter their political views, should be interviewed by a non-partisan journalist. He’s not the only one guilty of this btw #gmb.”

Meanwhile, another added: “Watching @adilray’s face during the Ed Miliband interview! If only Adil could say what he’s (probably) thinking without losing his job. #GMB.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and ITVX
