RACHEL Reeves and Sadiq Khan have been accused of backing an eco zealot plotting the demise of the British economy.

Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho blasted the Chancellor and Mayor of London for previously endorsing a report co-authored by Julia Steinberger from Just Stop Oil sister group Renovate Switzerland.

Steinberger contributed to the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, which both Ms Reeves and Mr Khan shared online with praise.

The report called on Governments to prioritise “equity, social justice, climate justice, rights-based approaches, and inclusivity” when tackling climate change.

Ms Coutinho told Daily Express: “It doesn’t come as a surprise that Rachel Reeves and Sadiq Khan backed Steinberger’s report, as one of Labour’s largest donors used to fund Just Stop Oil and is now a prominent campaigner against new nuclear.”

On December 5 Steinberger addressed more than 260 Just Stop Oil activists during an online meeting, infiltrated by the Daily Express.

During her speech, the eco-warrior advocated for replacing Britain’s “predatory” economic system with a “de-growth and post-growth” model.

‘De-growth’ and ‘post-growth’ are theories put forward by radical left-wing economists, arguing that countries should be reducing consumption and growth to save the planet.

Responding to Steinberger’s comments, Ms Countinho added: “Anti-growth policies are not the way to solve climate change. We are only 1% of global emissions – we will play our part but living standards in Britain must come first.”

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage added: “These people want to reverse human progress. They ought to go to China to protest instead.”
