Rachel Reeves is coming under heavy fire amid questions about her CV.

The Chancellor is facing multiple accusations that she has been misleading about her claims of a career as an economist before entering politics, after she was caught quietly making amendments to her LinkedIn profile.

Reeves told Stylist magazine in 2021 that she had spent a decade working as an economist at the UK’s central bank and “loved it”, as reported by The Telegraph.

However, her LinkedIn profile shows she worked there for six years between 2000 and 2006.

Aside from how long she worked at the Bank of England for, questions have also been asked about how senior Ms Reeves was during her time there.

Guido Fawkes website reported in October that while Reeves had previously claimed she worked as an “economist” at the Bank of Scotland between 2006 and 2009, she had actually been working in a support unit managing administration, IT and planning matters.

On her social media account, the Halifax-based job has now been subtly edited from “economist” to “retail banking”.

A Treasury source said: “She worked in retail banking covering various areas drawing on her background as an economist. Her LinkedIn has been updated to reflect that.“

The Conservatives are pressing her to be more transparent about her work history, insisting the row is far from trivial.

Robert Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, accused Ms Reeves of being “economical with the truth” while Richard Holden, the former party chairman, described the row as “incredibly serious” and one that raises “significant concerns about your ability to be honest with the British public”.

Mr Holden, who is the Tory party’s shadow paymaster general, has written to the Chancellor demanding she clarifies key facts.

And now questions are being raised over whether Reeves should resign in the midst of the controversy.
